 Roleplaying For Beginners
« Thread Started on Jun 17, 2008, 9:52pm »

NOTE: This was found on subeta.org. I did not type this x3

GM- GM stands for Godmodding. Godmodding is playing a character that his God-like powers. Examples of Godmodding are: Invincibility, Controlling Others Through Mind Control, etc.

PP- PP stands for Powerplaying. Powerplaying is playing a character that is not yours without permission from the owner of that character. Examples of Powerplaying are: Grabbing, Attacking, Kissing, Pushing, etc. without permission. (As in pushing characters)

Semi Literate- Semi Literate is a term referring to the ability to post at least three or four well developed sentences per post.

Literate- Literate is a term referring to the ability to post at least one paragraph per post with well developed sentences (at least 5-7) and correct spelling.

Advanced- Advanced is a term referring to the ability to post at least two-three well developed paragraphs per post with correct spelling. Advanced roleplayers tend to write longer posts, obviously.

Lists or Skeletons- A List intro (also referred to as a character skeleton) is a very basic layout of your character. It's typically used in Semi Literate roleplays and below, but is not limited to that category. Example of List will be added below.

Paragraph- a Paragraph intro is exactly how it sounds. It's a paragraph (or more) describing your character's looks, history, weapons, attire, etc. Everything that is in a list intro should be added into a paragraph intro. These are typically found in Literate and Advanced roleplays, but are not limited to those categories.

Flooding- Flooding is a term referring to posting excessively before other posters get the chance to post, causing them to have to get summaries, or drop out. Flooding is typically not accepted in ANY roleplay.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example of a List intro

Here is the basic layout of list intros. You can add or subtract things from this, to make it fit with your particular roleplay.

Name-
Age-
Gender-
Species-
Looks-
History-
Other-

Other things can be added. Weapons, personality, and oddities are just a few things.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example of a Paragraph Introduction

Ayumi Ieskae. Former student of Awai high, the most prestigious High school in Japan. She weighed 137 pounds even and stood at 5'7''. Short black hair flowed down to her shoulders, blond streaks quite prominent. Her eyes were a light, yet piercing, silvery-blue. She had the creamiest tan skin in the whole school and was pursued by all the men. That was before the accident.

She was hit by something hot, what it was wasn't clear and people refused to tell her, and scarred forever. The pink scar tissue went over her right eye and down her face, ending just behind her ear. She was viewed as a freak of nature and lost all her friends. Because of something that someone else did.

And so, she set out to get revenge. On who? It wasn't certain. But she would find who ruined her life. She would be merciless.

That's a fairly short example, and Paragraph intros are typically longer. But this shall do for now.

Character Design

Every character, be it good or bad, needs a set design. No two characters should look the same, feel the same way, have the same views, etc. Here are some basic steps you should keep in mind when designing your character. Also note that you can add or subtract things as you please. These are mere suggestions.

Step One: Think of a personality. Is your character going to be preppy or heroic? Courageous or bold? It's all up to you. Just keep in mind that it would be best for you to be able to play a character with that personality. Don't say your character is evil and have it doing good deeds. It just makes no sense. Personality development may take a while, but it's important to establish one before roleplaying.
Step Two: Have a unique name. Don't go name hunting on the forums and steal someone's character's name. I know sometimes it's hard to think of a good name, but stealing is out of the question. To make characters more realistic, first and last name would be a plus. Middle name is completely up to you.
Step Three: Decide a species or race of your character. Elves, demons, Angels, Wolves, dragons, etc. Are just a few possibilities.
Step Four: Decide a rank or occupation. Is your character an assassin? Gang member? Leader of a Skate crew? There are THOUSANDS of possibilities, so choose wisely.
Step Five: Your character isn't a walking piece of nothing. It's a living, breathing being. So, you must think of a body type/skin color/etc. Body types range from slender to fat, muscular to puny. Skin colors obviously go from white to black (or brown, whichever you prefer to call it). Eye colors, hair colors, and anything else that has to do with the main appearance of your character would have to be decided. (Not including clothing yet) If you are playing an animal, the same body types apply, but fur/scales can be any color you wish to have them. Scars, markings, and things such as that would also have to be decided.
Step Six: Clothing. Every character (at least in Subeta forums) must wear some sort of clothing. Be it a long tunic, a summer dress, or an incredibly detailed Knight outfit, your character must be dressed. Describing the clothing is important to get the true feel of your character. Clothing can match that of the character's appearance, or be completely opposite. Either way, clothing is key in a character, so decide wisely.
Step Seven: Accessories. Does your character have wings? Piercings? Painted nails, necklaces, etc? Decide whether or not they do. Accessories are not required in a character.

You see. Character design is KEY to a good character and roleplay. If you don't have a character, you don't have roleplay. Plain and simple. I'll add an example of a character, as simple reference to you new roleplayers.

''God, I hate thi plase.'' Said Ayumi, scrathing he head. ''It's so dull and unfun.'' she looked around adn saw a bird. ''cool bird.'' she mumbled. She tood up and went over to the bird. ''hi.'' she told it.

Look at all those spelling errors. And it's so short and boring. Seriously, don't post like that. Here\'s a slightly better one, but still not acceptable.

''Star, go get me that sword.'' mumbled Asya, a male warrior. The girl bowed and got what her master asked her to. ''Thanks.'' he stood in silence for a minute and then dropped the sword. he then ran outside, looking for someone to talk to. Star was so boring.

(It gets way off topic and makes no sense. Don't post like that either. Try to stay on topic.)

Examples of Semi Literate and Literate posts

These are taken from some of my roleplays. I typically write a minimum of one paragraph and a max of five or six. Sorry if you have to read a lot.

Rhys began panting, the pain spreading from his back to his toes, then back up to his head. It wouldn't be long before the Shikon shard healed him, but the pain was nearly unbearable. His head pounded and he could barely hear. He figured, yeah, the demons were talking about him and that brat TariTaru, who had scrambled up a tree and hopped off to some place. But the details were blurred. Until, of course, the Shikon shard within him was brought up. Anything regarding his life support was vital information, and obviously these demons were after it. He glared at them both for a few moments, then responded to Babylon's last question.

''Give up? What kind of question is that, demon?'' A smile spread across his face, despite the fact pain still ran it's course through his body. ''Nah, I'm not giving up, what about you?'' He chuckled and then his face suddenly went serious. I wonder if now is the time to use my powers. My TRUE powers. I'd be a bit rusty, sure, but still. I'm outnumbered, two to one, and these demons are incredibly strong. Then again, if I do use it, I risk hurting Suki and Sonza... A battle raged in his mind. A battle that could mean life or death for him and his clan.

Taken from mt Inuyasha roleplay. This would be a good example of a Literate post. Here is another one, from my Mythos roleplay.

Resting peacefully in the shadows on the borderline between the castle and the plantation. hood pulled up so it just covered piercing silver-green eyes, was Trevin. He was one of the stronger men on the king's side, so resting would not get him in trouble, unlike some of others. But, really, in the position the king and the whole land of Mythos was in, it didn't matter. Not anymore, at least.

Trevin stood up, suddenly, stretching and yawning. When finished, he began the short trek from his position to the entrance of the palace. He was stopped by the guards on duty, as he always was, and it took showing his trademark eyes to gain re-entry. He headed straight toward the stairs which would lead him to the higher guard quarters.

He was going to speak to Abelard, the head guard, who was in charge of getting together the party of searchers. His movements were swift and vigilant, and he was up the flight of stairs in no time, on the second floor, and heading toward the Head Guard's room. Again, he was there swiftly.

''Abelard, open up.'' He said, thick British accent making itself known. ''I 'ave to speak with you.'' He heard footsteps and some cursing before Abelard actually opened the door, half naked, with only a pair of lose trousers on. He seemed quite angry, but nonetheless, Trevin would speak to him.

''Wha is it, Trevin?'' Abelard asked, similar accent placed on his voice. ''Cause righ' now I'm kinda busy.'' Trevin almost snarled, but held back.

''We leave today, I 'ope you know. So get some clothes on for Pete's sake and get down to the throne room. 'lright?'' He said. ''I can't believe you would forget about something so crucial.'' Shaking his head, he left Abelard's door.

Today would be a very long day. A Day that would mark the beginning of a very important quest in Mythos.

It's obviously longer. Spelling mistakes are used to suggest a British accent, for Trevin is British. Other than that, this is a basic example of a Literate post...

Extra Tips

- Look at the characters that have been made. If you see a two people with similar personalities, CHOOSE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. No one wants to see four girls with a preppy attitude, or three guys that are brave. Have some variety in personalities.
- Keep on topic. Don't go from one place to another for no reason.
- Fill things! Don't just say ''Raylinn smiled.'' Say something like ''Raylinn smiled sweetly at the boy.'' It's not much longer, but it's a lot better.
- Try to make sense. Don't talk about something without knowing what it is you are actually talking about.
- Don't leave roleplays without telling the owner. It can tick people off and be a real roleplay ruiner.
- Don't act like the owner of the roleplay when you really aren't. It leads to huge disputes that could ruin friendships on Subeta. (And roleplays too)
- If you are leaving for vacation, TELL SOMEONE. Don't leave them hanging for three days.
- Follow rules that are provided. It's in your best interest. You should ALWAYS read rules.
- Have fun. Don't be a hater, kay?
- Check character gender ratio. Don't join as a male character if there are seven males and one female. It's just... Bleh.
